WHY OPTICALLY–FAINT AGN ARE OPTICALLY–FAINT: THE Spitzer PERSPECTIVE
نویسندگان
چکیده
Optically–faint X-ray sources (those with fX/fR> 10) constitute about 20% of X-ray sources in deep surveys, and are potentially highly obscured and/or at high redshift. Their faint optical fluxes are generally beyond the reach of spectroscopy. For a sample of 20 optically–faint sources in CDFS, we compile 0.4–24 μm photometry, relying heavily on Spitzer. We estimate photometric redshifts for 17 of these 20 sources. We find that these AGN are optically–faint both because they lie at significantly higher redshifts (median z ∼ 1.6) than most X-ray–selected AGN, and because their spectra are much redder than standard AGN. They have 2–8 keV X-ray luminosities in the Seyfert range, unlike the QSO–luminosities of optically–faint AGN found in shallow, wide–field surveys. Their contribution to the X-ray Seyfert luminosity function is comparable to that of z > 1 optically–bright AGN. Subject headings: galaxies: active—X-rays: galaxies—infrared: galaxies

We provide constraints on optically faint (I ≥ 24) X-ray sources, z > 6 AGN, Very Red Objects (VROs; I − K ≥ 4), and optically faint radio sources using the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field North survey. We argue that the majority of the optically faint X-ray sources are obscured AGN at z = 1–3. These sources comprise up to 50% of the X-ray detected AGN. Approximately 30% of the optically faint X-ray so...
متن کاملSpitzer IRS Spectra of Optically Faint IRAS Sources
Extragalactic sources from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog (FSC) which have the optically faintest magnitudes (E & 18) were selected by spatial coincidence with a source in the FIRST radio survey, and 28 of these sources have been observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS). While an infrared source is always detected with the IRS at the FIRST position, only ∼ 50% of the infrared sou...

We have surveyed a field covering 9.0 degrees within the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey region in Boötes with the Multiband Imaging Photometer on the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) to a limiting 24 μm flux density of 0.3 mJy. Thirty one sources from this survey with F24μm > 0.75mJy which are optically very faint (R & 24.5mag) have been observed with the low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectr...
متن کاملSpitzer Mid - IR Spectroscopy of Infrared - Luminous Galaxies at z ∼ 1 −
I discuss Spitzer GO programs aimed at studying the mid-IR spectral properties of IR-luminous galaxies at high z. I present the IRS lowresolution, mid-IR spectra of a sample of 52 sources from our GO1 medium size program. We found that ∼ 75% of the sample are at z ∼ 1.5−2.6, with redshifts determined based on features including PAH emission and silicate absorption in the mid-IR spectra. This da...

We report the initial results from a Spitzer GO-1 program to obtain low resolution, mid-infrared spectra of infrared luminous galaxies at z ∼ 1 − 2. This paper presents the spectra of eight sources observed with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS). Of the eight spectra, six have mid-IR spectral features, either emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) or silicate absorption. Base...
